Internship - Market Research & Data | CM Navigator

Salary Competitive

Want to understand what actually moves global freight markets?

A new grain season. Rising geopolitical tensions. Fuel prices moving. Port congestion. Ships suddenly heading in different directions.

What do these things have in common?

They all influence freight markets – and ultimately the USD/mt freight rates that commodity traders use every day.

At CM Navigator, you'll get to connect those dots.

You'll join our digital market intelligence business, working with research and data used by more than 100 commodity trading companies. And while Navigator will be your home base, you'll also be part of the wider Copenhagen Merchants Group – spanning brokerage, shipping, terminals, logistics, plant proteins and energy.

In other words, a pretty interesting place to learn how global trade actually works.

What you'll be doing

Your work will sit at the intersection of shipping, commodities, geopolitics and data.

You'll gradually learn how dry bulk voyages work, what they cost and why those costs change.

Your work will include:

  • Researching and maintaining the market data behind CM Navigator's freight rates

  • Following dry bulk markets, vessel movements, trade flows and freight rate developments

  • Investigating how geopolitical events, port congestion, bunker prices and other market changes affect voyage economics

  • Diving into numbers that don't add up – comparing sources, challenging assumptions and finding explanations

  • Supporting clients with questions about specific voyages, routes and freight calculations

  • Breaking down voyage costs and understanding what drives a USD/mt freight rate

  • Helping the team continuously improve research, data quality and methodology

Some days require structure and discipline. Others call for curiosity, detective work and a good commercial instinct.

Either way, your work ends up in a product used for real commercial decisions.

Who we're looking for

Got a curious brain, an analytical mindset and an interest in what makes global markets move?

You don't need to know the difference between a Panamax and a Supramax on day one. We'll teach you.

But we hope you:

  • Enjoy working with numbers, spotting patterns and figuring out why things happen

  • Follow global developments and are curious about how they affect business

  • Like asking questions, challenging assumptions and getting to the bottom of things

  • Are comfortable with Excel and interested in digital tools

  • Take responsibility for your work and enjoy getting things right

  • Like combining independent research with interaction with colleagues and clients

Experience with shipping or commodities is not required. Curiosity, analytical thinking and a willingness to learn matter much more.

And if you have a little Merchanteer in you – someone who enjoys connecting markets, people and commercial opportunities – even better.

What you'll get out of it

Real responsibility. Real market exposure. And hopefully a considerably sharper understanding of global trade.

You'll work alongside experienced freight and commodity professionals, learn how voyage economics translate into market prices and get involved in the research and client questions behind a growing digital platform.

You'll also get a look inside the wider Copenhagen Merchants universe – a Danish, family-owned group where commercial thinking, collaboration and a healthy dose of entrepreneurial spirit are part of everyday life.

We're informal, pragmatic and prefer useful work over corporate theatre.

We also have an octopus as our cultural ambassador, T.W. Heart. You don't need to understand that just yet. Most of us didn't either.

Working at
CM Navigator A/S

CM Navigator A/S – part of Copenhagen Merchants Group - is the company behind the digital platform for market intelligence and decision support in the agri-commodity and freight sectors – CM Navigator. Founded by Copenhagen Merchants Group, CM Navigator was initially developed in-house (starting around 2018) to aggregate the wealth of tacit market knowledge held by the group’s brokers and shipping experts. It was subsequently launched as a commercial SaaS platform in 2022 and later incorporated as an independent company in 2023 (while remaining majority-owned by CM Group). What it offers: CM Navigator provides real-time data and analytics tools to track commodity markets and logistics: • Live Prices & Global Benchmarks: Users get daily updated prices from major export regions (North America, South America, Europe, Black Sea, Australia, etc.) and a global CFR price matrix covering 600+ destinations, allowing easy comparison of origin competitiveness. This helps traders see, for example, how US corn fob prices plus freight compare to Brazilian corn into a given import market. • Freight Forecasting: The platform includes advanced freight tools that let users search among 250,000+ bulk freight routes with up to 12-month forward curves. This essentially functions as an instant freight rate calculator: a trader can input a specific load port and discharge port (or even a combination for multi-leg trades) and get current freight cost estimates and future rates. Such capability, drawn from Navi Merchants’ data, simplifies evaluating the delivered cost of commodities. • Supply/Demand & Trade Flows: CM Navigator continuously updates global supply and demand balances for key crops, and tracks trade flows. It integrates official data with on-the-ground insights (e.g., port line-up information) to give an up-to-date picture of export/import volumes and stock levels. This dynamic data can alert users to changes (such as a sudden surge in Ukrainian wheat exports or a drought cutting Argentine soy supply) much faster than traditional reports. • News & Insights: The platform delivers relevant news flashes and in-house analysis. For instance, it might highlight policy changes, weather events, or logistical issues affecting markets, along with commentary from CM’s analysts. Users also receive reports like grain export summaries or freight market outlooks, helping them stay ahead in volatile markets. Strategic purpose: The creation of CM Navigator reflects the group’s goal to “empower traders of all sizes in all countries” by democratizing access to high-quality market data. It takes the tacit knowledge that Copenhagen Merchants accumulated (through decades of brokerage and logistics operations) and scales it via technology. Internally, the platform ensures CM’s own teams and key clients operate with the same up-to-date information. Externally, it has become a new revenue stream and value proposition, attracting subscribers from the wider industry. By providing transparency and decision-support, CM Navigator strengthens Copenhagen Merchants Group’s role as an information broker. Its strategic goal is to be the go-to platform for anyone looking for integrated data on grains and freight, thereby enhancing market efficiency and extending the group’s influence in the digital domain.
