About RoyalHacks

RoyalHacks is Denmark's first national student hackathon. In April 2026 we ran the first edition at ITU with 62 participants, 5 university partners (ITU, KU, DMJX, AAU, and AU), 13 corporate partners, and funding from Tuborgfondet. RoyalHacks takes place over a weekend, and it's free for all university students to attend.

We bring together students with an interest in digital technologies and give them 24 hours to invent an idea and turn it into a functional product.

We're recruiting volunteers into our organizing team to help us plan RoyalHacks 2027, which will also take place in April.

About the Tech & Automation team

The Tech & Automation team builds and maintains the software/technology that helps RoyalHacks run. Our goal is to use technology to make RoyalHacks more effective, while building systems that future volunteers can maintain and improve. This includes developing software, automating repetitive work, maintaining our infrastructure, supporting other teams, and building tools specifically for the hackathon.

Examples of things the team might work on include:

• Building and maintaining the RoyalHacks website.

• Developing internal tools such as our judging platform.

• Automating repetitive workflows across different teams.

• Building integrations between tools such as Discord, Notion and other services.

• Maintaining self-hosted services and VPS infrastructure.

• Improving existing technical systems and making them more reliable.

• Building tools that help other departments work more efficiently.

• Helping different teams collaborate through better technical workflows.

• Potentially work with tools like: Python, React, Next.js, Docker, GitHub, n8n. The exact projects are not fixed. We want team members to help identify problems worth solving and think of solutions.

What you'll do

As a Tech & Automation volunteer, you will contribute to projects that have a real use within RoyalHacks. Depending on the organization's needs you may:

• Develop software and internal tools.

• Build automations and integrations.

• Work with APIs and external services.

• Contribute to our website.

• Work with VPS infrastructure and self-hosted services.

• Help maintain and improve existing systems.

• Explore how AI and coding agents can accelerate development and automation.

• Work with other teams to understand their problems and design solutions.

• Document your work so other volunteers can understand and maintain it. We want you to understand a problem, propose a solution, and take ownership of delivering it.

Who we're looking for

You don't need to be an expert developer. We're more interested in people who are curious, responsible, and willing to learn.

You might be a good fit if you:

• Have some experience programming or building software.

• Are interested in automation, software development, infrastructure, or AI

• Enjoy figuring out how things work

• Are comfortable learning technologies you haven't used before

• Can take responsibility for a project and follow it through

• Communicate when you're stuck rather than waiting until a deadline

• Are a team player, willing to work with other teams, and understand their needs

• Have experience leveraging AI tools for project development

Time and place

You'll commit to being involved with RoyalHacks from October 2026 to May 2027. We work both remotely and on-location in Copenhagen. We host regular in-person meetings and social events, and we expect team members to participate actively in the team. All team members are expected to be present for the full RoyalHacks event weekend in April 2027. The expected commitment is approximately 5–10 hours per week, depending on your responsibilities and the period leading up to the event.
