About HEKA VR

HEKA VR is a pioneering health-tech company based in the meatpacking district of Copenhagen. We are a producer of Software as a Medical Device, specialising in avatar therapy for severe mental disorders. Our product is currently being used in Denmark and we are participating in clinical studies across 14 countries.

Job description

We are looking for an intern to support the design and development team at HEKA VR.

Because we are a small team, your role will cover both UX research and UI design. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, prototyping & verification-testing: Designing and prototyping a new GUI, as well as testing and verifying designs with users.

  • Designing and testing hardware setups and user workflows.

  • Analyzing user feedback and translating it into design iterations.

  • Working closely with our product development team to implement your findings and designs.

  • Supporting day-to-day operational tasks, organizing inventory, preparing equipment and materials for usability trials, hosting workshops and demonstrations for stakeholders.

Because we are a medical device company, do expect a steep learning curve and a lot of responsibility, but with plenty of support and sparring along the way. There is much to learn, room to grow and a chance to make a significant impact, if you are up for it!

Qualifications

  • A desire to work with user research, UI design and product development that have a direct impact on the workflow of healthcare professionals.

  • Conduct user tests and analyze results.

  • The ability to make decisions and be the main driver of your tasks.

  • Proficiency in design and prototyping tools e.g., Figma (Unity is a plus).

  • A good understanding of IT, or generally being IT-savvy, is a big plus — you’ll be working closely with VR hardware, software, and digital tools.

  • Interest in healthcare, psychology, psychiatry, or clinical technology is a big plus but not essential.

We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and encourage people with different academic and professional backgrounds to apply.

Practical info

It is a requirement that you are able to work a majority of days at our office in Copenhagen.

The internship is 37 hours a week and will run from late August / early September 2026 to mid-December 2026.

This is an unpaid internship, but lunch, coffee, and snacks at the office are on us.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Heka VR

HEKA VR is a medical software platform that enables Avatar-Therapy, a form of psychotherapy, to be conducted in a Virtual Reality or in a Telehealth setting. VR-based Avatar Therapy combines psychology and VR technology to provide transformative interventions for mental health disorders. Grounded in research, this therapy utilises virtual reality and avatars to create immersive experiences. Through the concept of embodiment, individuals psychologically connect with their avatars, leading to significant changes in thoughts and behaviours. In schizophrenia, Avatar Therapy helps patients gain control over auditory hallucinations, but Avatar Therapy holds promise for improving mental health outcomes among patients with Eating Disorders, PTSD, Bipolar disorder, Borderline disorder, Major Depressive Disorder and many more. Heka VR was born through a public-private partnership and research project called The Challenge Trial - initiated in 2019, funded by the Danish Innovation Fund and with the final research results published in The Lancet Psychiatry in July 2025. The results show that VR based Avatar-Therapy is a an effective new treatment method for 7/10 patients with treatment resistant Schizophrenia. Currently Heka VR is involved in 10+ clinical trials and studies around the world, from North America to APAC. Our mission is to scale Avatar-Therapy globally and bring clinically proven treatment methods to the patients that need it the most!
