Role Overview

We are hiring a Principal Backend Engineer to lead backend architecture and drive the delivery of core product features. This is a foundational role where you will help scale a global product, work directly with the CTO, and influence our engineering culture, the main responsibilities of the role are as follows;

• Collaborate closely across disciplines, partnering with Product, Science, Commercial, to ensure that engineering decisions drive overall business success, not just technical outcomes.

• Strategise about scalability, performance, and product quality through the lens of the entire business.

• Mentor engineers, define best practices, and lead the adoption of AI and LLM integrations, as well as AWS CDK infrastructure.

• Collaborate closely with frontend, product, science, and design teams to ship features that create meaningful value for users and the company.

• Lead technical improvements in performance, reliability, architecture, and testing while maintaining a strong developer experience and clean codebase.

Role Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

• Define and evolve backend system architecture

• Lead design and code reviews with a focus on scalability, security, and maintainability

• Design and implement microservices and APIs in Golang

• Apply best practices for concurrency, observability, and error handling

• Drive performance improvements and optimize backend systems

• Work with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL

• Write unit and integration tests using Go’s native tools

• Debug and resolve complex backend issues

AI and LLM Integration

• Prototype and productize AI features using large language models

• Develop LLM-agnostic infrastructure for prompt orchestration and performance

• Collaborate with the behavioral science and AI teams to integrate personalized insights into the product

Cloud Infrastructure and CI/CD

• Author and maintain AWS CDK infrastructure (including VPCs, Lambda, ECS/EKS, RDS, IAM, S3, SQS, and SNS)

• Improve and extend CI/CD pipelines for mobile, web, and backend

• Apply cloud security best practices across infrastructure and services

  Cross-Functional Partnership

• Work closely with Commercial and Operations leaders to align technical strategy with business objectives

• Ensure backend decisions consider revenue and user growth, operational scalability, and long-term business success

• Champion business-oriented engineering practices within the team

Qualifications Experience and Expertise

• 5+ years of backend experience, ideally in Golang

• Strong knowledge of microservices, APIs, and system architecture

• Hands-on experience with AWS CDK and infrastructure as code

• Proven track record shipping LLM-based or AI-enhanced features in production

• Strong database and query optimization skills

• Solid understanding of testing frameworks and debugging in Go

• Experience working with graph-based systems or retrieval-augmented architectures is a plus

• Interest or experience in building data graphs such as knowledge or people graphs is a plus

Leadership and Collaboration

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

• Experience leading architecture discussions and making data-informed decisions

• Ability to partner cross-functionally with Commercial, Finance, Product, and Operations teams

• Strong mentoring skills and a passion for team growth
