Lead Fermentation Scientist

Salary Competitive

Deadline: December 10th 2023

Do you want to be a part of a vibrant biotech start-up with the vision to change how we produce our food?

Located in Copenhagen, Denmark, Biosyntia is a thriving biotech start-up with a team of 20 people dedicated to delivering sustainable precision fermentation processes for natural ingredients. With the support of international investors, we work together to create a global success and a more sustainable world through biomanufacturing. We are looking for an entrepreneurial and scientifically skilled person who share our vision to help bring biobased ingredients to the market through successful innovation of fermentation development.

Responsibilities and tasks:

We are seeking a senior fermentation scientist with experience in developing and optimizing fermentation processes to lead the company’s fermentation team. The candidate should have extensive experience in precision fermentation science, process control, and have a good understanding of microbial physiology. The successful candidate will be fully integrated in the existing team of metabolic engineers and will be responsible for advancing fermentation optimization and physiology at the company. We value proactivity and an innovative approach i.e. identifying areas of need and addressing them through the development of new technologies or by bringing outside technologies into the company.

The position requires interactions with several disciplines and partners, including analytical chemistry, strain engineering, downstream process development and external partners such as CMO’s and collaboration partner companies. You are expected to communicate on all levels and like to be involved with both commercial and science people.

Technology transfers and CMO support may be required during some periods, so you also enjoy traveling about ~5% on an annual basis.

 Immediate areas of responsibility:

  • Lead the planning, design and execution of fermentation experiments to maximise understanding and optimise strain performance.

  • Manager of the fermentation department including being people manager of the fermentation team.

  • Coordination with strain engineers, analytical chemists, and downstream process chemists to optimize collaboration and ensure a streamlined workflow that serves to improve overall process understanding with an emphasis on quality and robustness.

  • Improving systems for data collection and analysis.

  • Analyzing and presenting data to fellow scientists and external companies and partners.

  • Scale-down and up of fermentation processes (microtiter-plate and bench-scale fermenter).

  • Preparation of technology transfer documents.

Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of the connection between microbial physiology and process performance. Understanding of E. coli and S. cerevisiae physiology isa bonus.

  • Hands-on experience with bench-scale fermentation and plate-based culture methods with at least 5 years’ experience. Industrial experience is preferred.

  • Familiar with analytical chemistry/assay methods, automation systems, and LIMS.

  • Strong data analysis skills, including the use of statistics and control charts to monitor and analyze results. Ability to analyse large sets of data for hypothesis driven research.

  • Worked alongside strain high throughput screening teams and analytical chemistry teams to form a contiguous strain evaluation platform.

  • Experience working in a variety of scales. Preferably including up to pilot and commercial scale fermentation.

  • Knowledge of scalability considerations and an interest in downstream processing.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills due to cross collaborative nature of the role.

Education

  • M.Sc. or PhD in biotechnology or similar.

Working at
Biosyntia

Biosyntia ia a biotech start-up, which was founded by Morten Sommer, Hans Genee and Andreas Hougaard Laustsen as a spin-out from the Centre for Biosustainability, at the Technical University of Denmark. Today we are 20 passionate people with capabilities spanning from strain engineering, fermentation optimization, bioprocess development, business development and sales. Until now, we have raised EUR 10 million of which EUR 4 million are from national and grants. Our investors' great support and funding mean that today we are the leading developer of natural vitamin bioprocesses. Our ambition is to replace highly polluting chemical processes and challenge the status quo with significantly more sustainable fermentation processes. Proprietary microbial fermentation processes – our unique asset We produce natural ingredients based on microbial fermentation processes. While it compares to the process of brewing beer, it is distinguished by our unique and proprietary microorganisms. We select our microbes to produce specific natural ingredients of our choice. By integrating the developed microbes into full-scale manufacturing processes, we can deliver natural ingredients to our customers at unprecedented cost, quality, and scale with minimum environmental footprint. World leaders in vitamins and plant bioactives Nature is a treasure trove of ingredients, with more than 40.000 registered bioactives. Biosyntia focuses deeply on a subset of natural products. Our current product platforms position Biosyntia as a world leader within a selection of fermented vitamins and plant-derived bioactives.
