Hafnium Labs, a greentech startup enabling climate solutions with scientific software for faster and smarter chemical R&D, just created a seat at the table for a remarkable front-end developer. The position will be core to establishing our software as a standard for digital chemistry and the green transition.

Advances in chemistry are core to the green transition: From biofuels and carbon capture to substitution of harmful chemicals with environmentally friendly ones, the world spends $350 billion annually on chemical R&D to create a brighter future.

But progress is limited by slow and expensive trial-and-error experimentation and legacy enterprise software, incapable of incorporating state-of-the-art research and compute power.

We want to change that. Using technologies such as quantum chemistry and probabilistic machine learning, we have developed a set of breakthrough digital tools that help energy, chemicals, and consumer companies develop green products and carbon-free processes.

To succeed, we have gathered a team of exceptional scientists with strong software development skills. But building the world’s most powerful platform for predicting chemistry is only half the equation.

By building beautiful and modular interfaces, you will help turn cutting-edge technology into tools that make real-world impact.

Your charter has a number of components:

• Take leading role in designing and developing our interfaces

• Develop custom user interfaces and widgets for Jupyter Lab using React.js and Typescript

• Continuously work with our engineers and customers to improve user experience

• Work closely with the team to implement new features

• Prototype APIs in Python and design user journeys to enable utilization of the rich features offered by our powerful back-end

• Help shape and future-proof our tech stack, especially our front-end technologies

• Lead by example to contribute to our culture of best practice QA and testing

• Take active role in making high-level architectural design decisions on our front-end

  
  

We do not have a checklist of requirements that you need to fulfil. But you are expected to have excellent front-end engineering skills and it’s a plus if you already have experience with Jupyter Lab. In addition to our front-end technologies, our tech stack also includes databases (SQL), scripting and software development (C++, C#, Python, Julia) and cloud computing (customer-relevant platforms / Big 4). Any experience you have with these or other backend technologies is great, but not a requirement.

What we do require is that you are passionately curious, learn fast and proactively take ownership. Whether you have shipped fully featured B2B products to enterprise customers or have outstanding academic credentials, we’d love to hear from you if building software for enabling climate solutions excites you.

We expect you to thrive in a culture of high-quality and adaptable software delivery using code reviews and testing. This includes having a deep understanding of how to navigate the immediate benefit of a feature and the technical debt incurred by its implementation. Hafnium Labs was founded in 2016 but our passion for developing digital tools to advance chemical research goes back 17 years, where our two co-founders started their chemical engineering studies together. Since then, Bjørn combined his software developer background with award-winning academic performance, to develop the technology we are now bringing to market. Jon spent 6 years with BCG helping corporates reach their top strategic goals.

You will be working in an international team of mostly PhDs in chemistry and physics on a mission to bring cutting-edge digital tools to industrial use. Our office is in Copenhagen (Latin: Hafnia), from where the element Hafnium has its name.
