We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our newly founded Search & Recommendation team. The team will grow and nurture search and content discovery on Issuu, enhancing the reading experience on Issuu by guiding readers towards content that is relevant for them, and by suggesting additional content to explore on Issuu

Who you are

• 3+ years of relevant experience.

• Background working with search and recommender systems.

• Experience designing and building robust, high-volume production systems in a scalable microservice architecture.

• Experience in building, evaluating, maintaining and improving data-driven products at scale, which are real-time oriented.

• Experience setting up and operating Elastic Search.

• Excellent communications skills in English.

Bonus points

• A background in applied machine learning.

• Knowledge of near-real time stream processing and/or message-driven architectures (e.g. Spark, Storm, Aerospike, Kafka)

• Experience with commercial machine learning systems and/or recommender systems.

About engineering team

• We're working on Issuu's Story Cloud both on web and mobile apps, machine learning to better understand our content and reading experience.

• We use Python, Javascript/Typescript (client and server-side), and we're open to using new languages/technologies (e.g., we're assessing introducing Rust to our tech stack).

• Our architecture is micro-service-oriented using AMQP.

• We deploy multiple times a day on AWS and use Docker Swarm/Kubernetes, MySQL/Postgres, Redis, Elastic Search, etc.

• We strive to be agile, but we're not religious about Scrum, Kanban, or any other methodology.

• We have many cross-team guilds where we share knowledge, coordinate efforts, and help each other.

• "20% time"- everyone gets one day a week to invest as they see fit (i.e., learn something new, experiment with new ideas in the product, join efforts with others, improve what you think matters).
