Portchain: On a mission to solve the hardest problems in container shipping

The container shipping industry is the backbone of global trade, with 90% of all goods being transported by a container. The industry is, however, fundamentally inefficient: 50% of all container vessels are delayed coming into port, and fundamental planning processes are done manually in basic tools and spreadsheets.

Portchain (portchain.com), a Danish SaaS startup founded in 2017, builds AI-powered applications to solve the hardest planning problems in shipping. Backed by prominent investors and $5M in funding, its products are used by several global top-5 container terminals and carrier operators.

The role

Portchain is looking for a UX/Researcher who will take our discovery to the next level. If Teresa Torres is an inspiration and you agree with the focus Marty Cagan puts on Discovery, then there is a good chance you will be a good fit.

This role is our first dedicated UX/Researcher and will lead our efforts and culture in the area. We call it UX/Researcher because we want to emphasize the relation between the two and the need for understanding and building a good user experience based on our insights and knowledge.

You will be joining the Product team, working alongside Product Managers, Product Designers, and the Engineering team. We are still learning about how we best structure ourselves, so the UX/Researcher will be working both outside and inside the product teams to begin with. In all cases, you will be pivotal for us to understand our users, current and future, and allow us to build solutions that solve the correct problems.

Some of the things you will do (But you are the expert and will tell us what)

  • Plan, conduct, and analyze research to inform our product decisions by gaining an in-depth understanding of our users, their challenges, motivations, and ways of working in general.

  • Take in all relevant information and make it consumable by the rest of Portchain.

  • Promote best practices when it comes to Discovery - Guide Product and Engineering.

  • Build our knowledge base, make it accessible and make sure it continues to grow.

  • Maintain a user board that we can reach out to for quick feedback.

What you'll ideally have

  • Around four or more years of research experience working with digital products.

  • Have seen a few different companies or bigger projects and can tell us stories from your experience.

  • Skilled in qualitative and quantitative research and have the practical tools to go along with it.

  • You have a strong knowledge of human-centered design, usability principles, and how research can contribute.

  • You have excellent English and visual communication skills, both in presentation, written, and verbal.

  • You are a good collaborator and include others in your process and ideas.

  • Got experience with working with engineers and other designers.

Bonus Points if

  • You have experience working with a B2B product.

  • You have experience working in an agile and iterative product team.
