Phanofi is a DTU spin-out building the next generation of optical communication infrastructure. We design integrated photonic interconnect chips that dramatically reduce power consumption and increase data throughput for AI datacenters, quantum computing, and space applications. As a diverse team of 15 people, we are at an exciting inflection point, and we are looking for a talented student assistant to strengthen our embedded systems work.
As Student Assistant in Embedded Systems, you will develop the firmware that brings our photonics lab setups to life. Working closely with our engineering team, you will build STM32-based systems for signal generation, acquisition, processing, and monitoring, turning hardware into working, measurable systems. This is a hands-on role with the opportunity, and expectation, to see your code run on real lab equipment from day one.
Firmware Development: Design, implement, and maintain C firmware for STM32 microcontrollers, ensuring robust, well-structured code that supports our lab setups and experiments.
Interfaces & Device Control: Connect, configure, and control external devices over SPI and I2C, while ensuring reliable communication between the microcontroller and the surrounding hardware.
Signal Generation, Acquisition & Processing: Generate signals and waveforms, acquire and monitor analog signals, and process the acquired data on the MCU through filtering, averaging, and feature extraction.
Lab Work & Documentation: Bring up and debug hardware using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debuggers, while documenting code and results clearly and maintaining version control with Git.
Education: You are currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics, or a related discipline.
Embedded Experience: You bring good knowledge of C and microcontroller fundamentals along with practical experience with STM32 or comparable ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers.
Interfaces & Peripherals: You have hands-on experience with SPI, I2C, DMA, timers, ADC, and DAC, from configuring the peripheral to debugging it on the bench.
Electronics: You are able to read and understand electronic circuits, schematics, and datasheets. Electronics skills such as circuit design, soldering, and measurement, as well as real-world lab experience, are considered an advantage. Experience with PCB design (KiCad or Altium) and Python or MATLAB for data analysis is a plus.
Soft Skills: You are a structured and independent problem-solver who enjoys working at the boundary between hardware and software, communicates effectively with colleagues, and thrives in a fast-paced deep-tech startup environment. Fluency in English is required.
We care about your growth and development. You will work on cutting-edge photonics and embedded technology alongside highly motivated colleagues, with access to a well-equipped lab. We offer competitive hourly pay, flexible hours that fit around your lectures and exams, a positive culture with free snacks, and the opportunity to write your Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis with us.
If you are interested in joining us on our entrepreneurial journey, we encourage you to submit your CV, a current transcript of records, and a few lines about an embedded project you have worked on (a link to a Git repository is a plus). We aim to fill the position as soon as possible. We look forward to hearing from you!
