👀 The Payroll Product Team at Shine

We are a small, ambitious, and close-knit product and tech team building modern payroll software for the Dutch market. Our product team consists of seven people: three backend engineers, two frontend engineers, a product designer, and a product manager, all working remotely in a highly collaborative environment.

We are entering a new phase focused on building the best modern payroll solution in The Netherlands: a complex SaaS product with challenging domain logic, scalability challenges, and plenty of interesting technical problems to solve.

Leading a team of dedicated experts, where the absence of corporate layers means faster decisions and genuine ownership, you'll be stepping into a lean, agile environment where your contribution is immediately impactful and highly visible. You’ll help us in engineering groundbreaking solutions that redefine an industry, delivering multiple significant projects and features for our customers, and by joining us, you will become a key part of making this vision a reality.

While our core development team operates effectively from their remote base in Zwolle, we believe there is significant value in establishing a strong in-person presence at our fantastic Amsterdam headquarters for this specific role, enabling in-person collaboration, particularly with key stakeholders and cross-functional teams who are primarily based there. We remain open to considering alternative working arrangement for exceptional candidates from across the Netherlands and would encourage you to apply if such an arrangement is required.

Come build the future with us.

📋 Your Role as an Engineering Manager in the Payroll Product Team

We are looking for an Engineering Manager who is excited to help scale our engineering team, strengthen our delivery processes, and support the growth and success of our team. You will play a key role in building, mentoring, and empowering a high-performing engineering team, helping create an environment where engineers can do their best work and continue to grow. Our company is at an exciting inflection point in its growth trajectory. We are looking for a dedicated Engineering Manager who can provide strong people leadership, bring structure to execution and collaboration, and help the team scale effectively.

As an Engineering Manager in our Payroll Product team, you’ll combine the need for speed and pragmatism with the non-negotiable demand for long-term reliability and scalability. You will be the force multiplier, significantly elevating our engineering quality bar, core standards, delivery processes, and collaborative spirit across the entire product and engineering organisation. Your role is multifaceted, encompassing leadership, technical mastery, operational discipline, and strategic foresight. The ideal candidate will provide a crucial balance of essential development principles:

  • Leadership: Leading a small team that we aim to expand, you’ll cultivate a safe, ambitious, and collaborative engineering culture that is resilient and high-performing. You’ll coach, mentor, and develop a remote-friendly team, and lead by believing in empowerment over orders, instilling a culture where feedback is a gift, making sure the team environment is psychologically safe.

  • Technical Excellence: You help create an engineering culture where quality, reliability, and maintainability are central to how we build software. Together with our Software Architect and other engineers, you support the team in making thoughtful technical decisions and balancing short-term delivery needs with long-term sustainability. You’ll help mature the team’s approach to engineering quality, code reviews, testing practices, and operational excellence, enabling the team to consistently ship robust and maintainable features. You are able to identify technical and organisational bottlenecks early, helping the team improve processes, collaboration, and overall effectiveness as we continue to scale.

  • Delivery & Operational Capability: You will establish and maintain a clear, predictable cadence of how we plan, prioritise, and execute - making sure we ship on time, iteratively, and with minimal organisational friction. You’re comfortable with distributed and event-driven systems and embody a true "You build it, you run it" DevOps mindset, taking accountability for the production environment's observability, reliability, and security. You are relentlessly driven by measurable outcomes, ensuring that every decision contributes to a platform that is demonstrably more scalable, stable, and maintainable

You will tackle real-world complexity that requires deep technical thinking.

  • Define Our Future: This is an opportunity to be absolutely pivotal in shaping the technology stack, the people strategy, and the enduring team culture from this critical, early growth stage. Your personal and professional impact will be felt daily across the entire business.
