Lead Software Architect — Proteins.1 | Espoo/Helsinki, Finland

Proteins.1 is building the PCR for Proteins — a novel diagnostic platform that detects disease biomarkers at the single-molecule level. Backed by Lifeline and Cloudberry Ventures, we are transitioning from deep-tech research to a commercial medical device. We have the biology, the hardware, and the IP. Now we need the software.

The Role

You are Employee #1 for software. You will start with a blank repository and full ownership of the entire vertical software stack — from firmware talking directly to hardware, all the way up to the tools our scientists use to visualize experimental results. This is not a web or SaaS role. You will write code that moves physical liquids in a lab.

What You'll Build

Firmware & control: Write the code that drives our digital microfluidic chip — precise timing, electrode actuation, sensor readout — using Python, C, C++, or Rust on bare metal or an RTOS.

Platform & host: Build the Embedded Linux host environment that orchestrates the device, manages drivers, and exposes APIs to the outside world.

Data pipeline: Design the architecture that reliably moves complex biological data off the device and into persistent storage without loss.

Scientist tooling: Build internal dashboards and GUIs (Qt, React, or Python-based) that let our R&D team visualize fluid movements and data signals in real time — closing the feedback loop between software and science.

Who You Are

You are a founder-caliber Systems Architect with deep embedded and firmware expertise and the breadth to own architecture end-to-end. You are comfortable reading schematics, using logic analyzers, and debugging at the hardware-software interface. You have designed systems from scratch and know how to properly decouple a hardware abstraction layer (HAL) from application logic. Experience with Embedded Linux and device drivers is expected. Bonus points for data engineering skills (Python, SQL, cloud storage) and a willingness to prototype fast with Arduino or Raspberry Pi before committing to a final architecture.

How We Work

We are serial entrepreneurs with backgrounds spanning drones, space, AI, biotech, and medtech — from R&D through globally shipped hardware products. There is no legacy code to navigate. You choose the stack, the tools, and the standards. As we move toward a customer-facing product, you will grow the team by hiring frontend and UX specialists to build on your foundation. We are based in Espoo and value in-person, high-bandwidth collaboration — relocation support is available.

Why Join

You won't be optimizing ad clicks. You'll be building a machine that detects disease. This is a high-ownership, high-equity founding role in a company with real science, a strong IP position, and a team that values intellectual honesty, correctness, and reproducibility. You will work directly with Harri, who previously built and exited a regulated active implant company to a US medtech giant.

Apply by sending your GitHub profile or a brief description of the hardest system you've built to Harri.

Proteins.1

Proteins.1 is a Finnish biotech startup on a mission to make diseases detectable years before symptoms appear — when treatment is most effective and survival rates are highest. The Problem For diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's, the body releases early warning proteins into the bloodstream long before any clinical symptoms emerge. The problem is that these signals are so faint that today's blood tests simply cannot detect them. By the time a diagnosis is made, the disease has often already progressed to a stage where treatment options are limited and outcomes are far worse. Our Solution We've developed a breakthrough technology called Affinity-Mediated Transport (AMT) — think of it as bringing PCR-like amplification to proteins. Just as PCR revolutionized the detection of genetic material, our platform makes individual disease-signaling proteins visible from a standard blood sample, at sensitivities up to 1,000 times beyond what current gold-standard diagnostics can achieve. The technology originated at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, has been validated through EU breakthrough innovation funding, and is protected by granted patents in both the EU and the US. Where We Are Founded in 2025 and backed by €4.7M in pre-seed funding from Lifeline Ventures and Cloudberry Ventures, we are a team of deep-tech founders, engineers, and scientists based in Espoo, Finland — building the next generation of diagnostic instruments that could fundamentally change how the world detects and treats serious disease.
