We are looking for a Theory Intern to join our Modeling and Dynamics team, where quantum theory is applied directly to the design, calibration, and optimization of cutting-edge quantum processing units (QPUs).

In this role, you will focus on running and analyzing numerical simulations of quantum gates, reset, and readout processes using existing modeling tools. You will gain hands-on experience in applying quantum mechanics to practical engineering problems, while working closely with experienced theorists and collaborating with experimental and device teams.

This is a unique opportunity to learn how theoretical models and simulations guide real-world quantum hardware development in an industrial R&D environment.

What will I be doing?

  • Running numerical simulations related to quantum gate operations, reset, and readout

  • Applying theoretical models to support QPU design, calibration, and performance optimization

  • Performing numerical calculations, primarily using Python-based tools

  • Analyzing simulation results and contributing to clear technical reports

  • Participating in regular technical meetings and team discussions

  • Collaborating with experimental and calibration teams to support interpretation of measurement results

  • Contributing to the continuous development and improvement of modeling and dynamics tools

What skills do I need?

  • Strong enthusiasm for learning and applying quantum physics through numerical simulations

  • Demonstrated, solid understanding of quantum mechanics at university level

  • Hands-on basic knowledge of numerical methods, preferably using Python

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team

  • Good communication skills and willingness to document and explain results clearly

  • MSc degree not required; suitable for advanced students or early-career candidates

Nice-to-have experience

  • Prior experience with theory or simulation work in a research or project setting

  • Familiarity with superconducting qubits, quantum optics, or related quantum technologies

  • Strong academic performance in relevant physics courses

What can I expect from IQM?

  • You’ll contribute to real quantum computing projects that are shaping the future of the field. You’ll apply quantum mechanics through simulations that directly support the design and calibration of cutting-edge quantum processors.

  • You’ll work in a creative and open start-up environment that encourages learning, curiosity, and experimentation.

  • We are a highly international and collaborative workplace, where you’ll interact with people from different scientific and cultural backgrounds.

  • As a growing company, we offer you the chance to be part of an exciting success story, gaining valuable industry experience while contributing to technology that truly matters.
