Tech Lead - Shape the Future of Cities with Code

Salary Competitive

Want to build cities with code, while also guiding the technical direction of an ambitious scale-up?

Imagine shaping the future of urban life, not with steel and concrete, but with data, insights, and clean, scalable systems. At Plaace, that’s exactly what you’ll do.

As our Tech Lead, you will play a central role as the person accountable for technical leadership at Plaace, driving architecture, engineering culture, and team development, while staying close to the code. You’ll help build not just our platform, but also the engineering organisation that will take Plaace to the next stage of growth.

This role is perfect for someone who wants to be hands-on, lead by example, make technical decisions with long-term impact, and collaborate closely with the business to bring a visionary product to life. It’s also an ideal opportunity for someone who wants to grow into a broader technical leadership role by shaping teams, architecture, and ways of working while staying close to the craft.

About Us

Plaace is a fast-growing Norwegian tech scale-up on a mission to create vibrant, livable cities. Our platform combines state-of-the-art analytics with newly available data sources to power smarter, data-driven decisions for anyone shaping the physical world.

We work with leading retailers, restaurants, gyms, property owners, and public-sector organisations across the Nordics, including Elkjøp, Eplehuset, SATS, and more. Together, we’re transforming how locations are chosen and how cities evolve.

Our strategic data partnerships with Telia and BankAxept ensure we have the comprehensive datasets required to deliver deep insights and real impact.

The Opportunity

You’ll be joining Plaace at an exciting point in our journey. We’ve spent the past five years building a solid platform and secured 100+ customers across the Nordics. With strong traction and a growing market, the next phase is all about scaling technology, team, and product.

As Tech Lead, you will be the highest technical leader, and your responsibilities will include:

  • Act as the hands-on technical leader, driving both architecture and implementation.

  • Guide and develop engineers, ensuring strong engineering practices and a supportive environment.

  • Own key technical decisions and align them with the company’s long-term product and business goals.

  • Help shape how our teams, processes, and systems evolve as we scale.

You’ll collaborate closely with our CEO and COO on product strategy and business alignment, while taking ownership of the technical direction and the engineering team’s growth. It’s ideal for someone who wants to stay deeply involved in coding while also taking on broader leadership and architectural responsibility.

You will also play a key role in how Plaace explores and adopts new AI-powered development tools. We’re looking for someone who actively follows AI trends, understands how they impact modern software development, and can turn new capabilities into real productivity gains without compromising code quality or long-term maintainability.

🏗️ What You Will Be Doing

  • Take ownership as the primary technical leader in the company

  • Contribute hands-on to the codebase across the stack, leading by example.

  • Build and expand an engineering team that values quality, learning, collaboration, and autonomy.

  • Drive architectural design and ensure our systems are scalable, secure, and built for growth.

  • Implement best practices for testing, CI/CD, monitoring, and maintainable code.

  • Work closely with product, design, and commercial teams to balance customer needs with business goals.

  • Prepare the platform for PLG (Product-Led Growth) and set us up for AI-driven product capabilities.

  • Shape engineering culture and processes as we grow the team and organization.

👤 Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who is both a builder and a leader, someone who enjoys coding, cares about quality, and is ready to take responsibility for the technical domain.

You likely have:

  • Strong full-stack engineering experience, with the ability to connect frontend, backend, and infrastructure.

  • Solid architectural experience: system design, API design, scalability, and technical decision-making.

  • Experience mentoring or leading engineers, with a supportive and empowering leadership style.

  • A pragmatic, solution-oriented mindset with a focus on delivering value.

  • The ability to work end-to-end, owning problems and driving them to completion.

  • A collaborative nature, bringing out the best in cross-functional partners.

  • A desire to help build not only a platform, but also a company, a team, and a culture.

You are based in Oslo.

We also know great candidates come from many paths. If you think you can create impact in this role, we’d love to hear from you, even if you don’t check every box.

🧰 Your Toolkit

You don’t need to know our exact stack from day one; what matters most is a strong foundation, curiosity, and willingness to learn.

We work with:

Frontend: Typescript, Next.js

Backend: Typescript, Node.js, GraphQL

Database: PostgreSQL

Infrastructure: AWS

Bonus: Python, GCP, BigQuery

🚀 What We Offer

  • A central leadership role in a growing, VC-backed scale-up.

  • The opportunity to define the technical direction and engineering culture.

  • A friendly, ambitious, high-performing team that values quality and collaboration.

  • The ability to see your work directly influences how cities and communities develop.

  • Competitive benefits: 5 weeks vacation, solid insurance, and equipment of your choice.
