As a Mechanical Design Engineer at Clair Scientific, you'll be responsible for designing, developing, and validating the mechanical systems that form the backbone of our novel automated microscopy instruments. Your work will ensure our equipment operates with the precision and reliability that scientists demand; from sub-micron positioning systems to thermal management solutions to the sleek, functional enclosures that house everything. We're looking for someone who understands that mechanical design isn't just about making parts fit together, but about creating elegant systems that perform flawlessly under real-world conditions. Design and develop mechanical assemblies for automated microscopes
Create detailed technical drawings, specifications, and manufacturing documentation
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical, electrical, and software systems
Oversee prototyping, testing, and validation of mechanical designs
Work with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure design for manufacturing
Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues in existing products
Drive mechanical design standards and best practices across products
Design instrument enclosures, covers, and user-facing mechanical interfaces
Ensure industrial design aesthetics align with functional requirements
3+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering
Proficiency with CAD software (Onshape or similar preferred)
Strong understanding of materials, tolerancing, and relevant manufacturing processes (e.g. machining, sheet metal fabrication, injection-molding, etc.)
Experience taking designs from concept through production
Knowledge of precision mechanics and motion control systems
Strong analytical and creative problem-solving capabilities
Experience with optical or scientific instrument design
Familiarity with automation and robotics systems
Experience with industrial design or consumer product enclosures
Understanding of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) considerations
