Mechanical engineer

Salary Unpaid

Want to develop next-gen climate tech for agriculture?

ABchar is developing a new type of bioheat system that combines heat production with carbon storage. Our goal is to give farmers a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels while actively capturing carbon in the soil, through biochar.

We're now looking for a mechanical engineer passionate about green technology and hands-on problem solving - not as a traditional employee, but as a co-founder or early contributor who believes in the project and wants to help bring it to life. You'll work closely with our CTO, Carl Aschjem, and play a key role in the product's development.

We’re not offering a salary at this stage, but we do offer:

  • Ownership shares in the company

  • Freedom and flexibility (workload adapted to your availability), either with us in Trøgstad or remotely

  • The opportunity to be involved in everything from prototyping to testing

  • A chance to build technology that can make a difference in Norwegian and global agriculture

  • A solution backed by Innovation Norway and supported by a strong network

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and testing of the next prototype of our bioheat system

  • Take part in selecting components, and designing and constructing the burner and pyrolysis reactor

  • Follow up on production and assembly, troubleshoot during pilot testing and operation

  • Play a central role in shaping the technical development and production strategy of the product

Qualifications

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has a background in mechanical engineering, product development, energy and process technology, or similar fields

  • Is curious about bioheat and sustainable innovation

  • Enjoys working in a role that blends theory and practice, and wants to build something – not just draw it

  • Wants to help shape a growing company from the ground up

ABchar is developing a new type of pyrolysis reactor, affordable heating and the possibility of small-scale biochar production, adapted to agriculture.. This will help achieve the goal of a 40% reduction in emissions from the agricultural sector. What is pyrolysis? Simply put, this is the heating of an organic material without access to oxygen. This leads to a series of reactions that ultimately result in 3 main products; biochar, oil and gas. We want to utilize the biochar in this process. The oil and gas will be burned and the heat from this will be used to dry grain, heat barns, greenhouses, residential buildings and other things that need heat on a farm. Why pyrolysis and biochar? Plants absorb CO2 from the air around us through photosynthesis. They are actually extremely good at this too. The residual product is mainly oxygen and the plant material. The great thing about pyrolysis is that we are able to separate water, oxygen and hydrogen from the plant material and we are left with more or less pure carbon 80% +. This is carbon from the air! If we take this coal and spread it on our agricultural land, it will be stored there for up to 1000 years and perhaps longer. In some cases, the soil will become more fertile and less vulnerable to periods of too much or too little water.
