Join DanSTAR: Your Gateway to Rocket Science!
Hey there, future rocket scientist!
Are you a student with a passion for user interface and experience design? Do you want to help make mission-critical software that controls rockets from afar? Look no further! At DanSTAR, we are currently looking for bright co-workers to join our Mission Control team and contribute to building our latest and most advanced bi-propellant rocket, Fornax.
While we value curiosity and a willingness to learn, this position specifically requires a solid foundation in UI/UX design. You’ll be self-driven when it comes to creating intuitive, effective interfaces, while receiving implementation support from the rest of the team.
Our Mission Control Team is responsible for designing the software that controls our rocket from the ground. Your primary focus will be ensuring the user interface is clean, easy to use, and provides a quick overview of all essential subsystems during critical moments like launches. This is a vital role where your designs can make a real difference in ensuring smooth and error-free operations.
You will primarily be working with the Mission Control team, but there will be plenty of cross-collaboration with other departments, to refine and improve our overall software systems. Generally speaking, you are expected to work independently on UI/UX design while collaborating on the technical implementation with the rest of the team.
The specific projects you’ll work on will depend on your skills and interests, but here the mission-critical tasks, prioritized in top-down order of importance, that you’ll be involved in:
Designing a user-friendly interface for the Mission Control system, prioritizing clear and intuitive layouts.
Ensuring critical information is clear and accessible in high-pressure situations.
Continuously improving the interface to minimize potential user errors during critical operations.
Developing mission live-stream overlay with live visual representations of data, i.e. pitch/yaw/roll of rocket, velocity, altitude, etc.
Website UI design development.
UI/UX design of homemade internal management tools.
Proficiency in UI/UX Design: You’ll need a strong foundation in designing intuitive and effective user interfaces as you’ll be driving the design process independently.
Independence: You'll be expected to work independently on your tasks, but don’t worry – at DanSTAR, we learn together and work as a team, so you’ll always have a great support system.
Effort: Willingness to put in the effort is key. We're a supportive group, but we value dedication and hard work.
A keen interest in rocket propulsion and a drive to learn and contribute. This is a volenteer position, with an expected time commitment is about 9 hours/week– and sometimes more when testing gets intense.
We are a student run organization, based at DTUs (Technical University of Denmark) Skylab - consisting of students from across universities (ITU, DTU, CBS). We are dedicated to teaching ourselves real-life rocket science – something you won't find anywhere else in Denmark! From financial bookkeeping to technical decisions, everything is handled by our members. We're pushing the boundaries of what's possible in a student association, aiming to reach further and higher into the sky.
We're on a mission to build a small, scalable bi-liquid rocket (Fornax) capable of completing a full flight event, including recovery. This project is about building DanSTAR's infrastructure, knowledge, and skills for even larger future undertakings. Fornax is projected to launch during the summer of 2025 in Portugal in the European Rocketry Challenge (EuRoC).
