Paint'R is looking for an intern for an exciting technical project!

Salary Unpaid

Are you a student passionate about being part of an exciting technical startup? Then we have the perfect opportunity for you! We are seeking a curious and committed intern to support us in developing a machine that can handle our innovative Paint'R bags during the filling process.

Who are we?

Paint'R is a startup founded by three DTU engineers who have created an innovative solution for the paint industry. We challenge the traditional paint bucket with our sustainable and more practical packaging, which reduces CO2 emissions and optimizes transport. Through this, we save about 65% in CO2 emissions and make everyday life easier for painters. We collaborate with several paint manufacturers who, in connection with the implementation of our solution, are requesting machines to handle large-scale filling of our packaging.

What will you be working on?

The goal of the project is to develop a machine that can handle Paint'R bags from a roll format, place them for filling, and seal them after air removal. You will work closely with Johan, our CTO, who will be your mentor and guide throughout the project. It is important to emphasize that you will have a great deal of autonomy and the opportunity to influence the direction of the project. We believe that the best solutions are created through freedom and responsibility.

Your tasks will include:

  • Initial research of similar concepts

  • Customer contact to understand their needs

  • Designing and implementing solutions for handling and filling bags

  • Developing and optimizing sealing processes

  • Communication with PLC systems and backend equipment

What can we offer?

  • A unique opportunity to work in an innovative startup with a strong focus on sustainability

  • A hands-on experience with significant influence on the project's direction

  • Access to mentoring and guidance from experienced professionals

  • A flexible work environment in Allerød, DTU Science Park, and possibly at DTU Skylab.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a student who:

  • Is eager to work on technical product development

  • Is curious and can think outside the box

  • Has experience with automation, machine design, or similar (an advantage, but not required)

  • Is independent and can take responsibility for their tasks

Practical Information

  • Workload: Full-time (37 hours/week), other setups (e.g. 10 ECTS points) might also be an option.

  • Duration: One semester, or similar, with the possibility of extension to a student position.

  • Location: Allerød, DTU Science Park, or DTU Skylab

Does this sound like something for you? If you have any questions or want to discuss options, feel free to contact us.

Join Paint'R and help shape the future of sustainable solutions in the paint industry. We look forward to hearing from you.

In the European Union alone, more than 1.5 million paint buckets are discarded daily, constituting a disposal of 340 tons of single-use plastic that is incinerated each day. Starting from early 2023 (2025 in Denmark and Slovenia), manufacturers are obligated to cover the disposal costs of their packaging based on sustainability criteria. In Denmark, this translates to an estimated 15% fee on paint buckets. Furthermore, the conventional round shape of packaging has proven suboptimal for logistics and transportation. Beyond its environmental impact, the traditional paint bucket poses challenges for professional painters. These challenges encompass ergonomic issues during handling, such as the strain of lifting two buckets simultaneously, which exceeds recommended weight limits according to the Working Environment Authority. Painters also find themselves in awkward positions when pouring paint into a roller bucket for wall application. The demanding physical nature of the painting profession in Denmark results in accelerated fatigue and early retirement for painters. Additionally, issues like lid leakage due to dried paint and the use of fragile, porous plastic contribute to unexpected spills, particularly during abrupt vehicle stops. Our innovative solution involves a cardboard box housing two patent-pending plastic bags, each containing 5 liters of paint. This packaging not only enhances the workflow for professional painters but also reduces costs and lowers carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions by approximately 65% per unit. The box's design facilitates easy and ergonomic transportation, allowing for a 45% increase in units per pallet. The box is opened, and one of the bags is inserted into a standard roller bucket used by painters. The bag effortlessly opens and seamlessly fits into the roller bucket, wrapping around the edges, and enabling the painter to begin work promptly. This functionality is made possible through an innovative patented design and specific plastic welding techniques.
