I'm Jussi, currently riding solo at the MeetingPackage design department. I'm seeking a fellow design generalist to form a dynamic duo with me. This isn't just about transforming a solo act into a harmonious duet, though. Having you by my side not only grants us the right to call ourselves a team (because labelling a one-man band a 'design team' has always felt a tad grandiose) but also enables you and me to design and build a better product together, which will be super fun!
As designer number two, you'll work with everything in our design realm, from high-level planning and user research to creating visuals and pixel-perfect UIs and interactions in Figma. And while I know design engineers are a rare breed, I can't help mentioning that it would be a great bonus if you had development experience. For what it's worth, I'm a designer-turned-developer, and I think it's made me a whole lot better designer.
Okay, that's enough for the fancy words, let's see some concrete examples. To do this, I fired up my beloved todo app (Things, what a lovely piece of native macOS software) to show you some of my completed tasks from the last week:
Redesign the Settings section + the setting link card
Write monthly product update
Unify navigation iconography
Introduce the LoadingSkeleton component to Kenneth (our engineering lead) to improve the loading experience
Design "Expand all" feature for tables with nested tables
Map of the current "Corporate codes" page structure and functionality
Read the regression test report + create tickets where needed
Help Abbie (from our Sales team) with sales deck design
Improve nested table separation from the top-level toggles
Clean up the dashboard layout component in Figma
If any of the above tasks made your designer heart skip a beat, then brace yourself—there's plenty more where that came from. Let's dive deeper into the nitty-gritty details!
PS. I also do plenty of PR reviews for our front-end implementations, but apparently not during the last week.
Design delightful user experiences. Thousands of users worldwide will benefit from your work. Little do they know it all started from your Figma file (or VS Code).
Work with a design engineer and front-end developers. That design engineer is me, and our frontend development team is now five people strong. You'll have all the horsepower required to make your designs come true. And then some.
Plan and design new features. When faced with a big feature, you pull out your paper and pencil and start to figure out the big picture. How does this fit into our product? Who is this for? What would the user journey look like? When you have an initial sketch ready, you are comfortable presenting your ideas, gathering feedback and iterating until satisfied.
Contribute to our Figma design system. Our Figma is organized with custom cover images rocking our comprehensive color system. You have my word for it: it will be love at first sight.
Work with complex challenges. Integrations are at the core of our product. We support several external systems and want everything to work smoothly in one unified UI. You get your kicks from finding elegant, simple solutions to complex issues.
Own your work. We give you responsibility and autonomy for your work.
Be obsessed over details. You take pride in your work and output. You keep spacings even, have an eye for typography and your inner designer might even be a part-time copywriter, as you know the value of well-written copy.
Support other departments. You'll become everyone's best friend when helping with sales decks, producing beautiful website images and fine-tuning that PR report feature image. I just helped today our COO Mika with his keynote presentation, and he's super happy about it.
Are a front-end developer. I know design engineers are a rare breed, but hey, it doesn't hurt to ask. I know it's painful sometimes to wear two hats (designer + developer), but I also believe it results in better design decisions. Ultimately, most of your designs will be converted into HTML, CSS and JS.
You're detail-oriented. You've seen and used so many online services and apps that you immediately know when something feels right (or wrong). Ah, that loading animation speed is a bit off. Hmm, with proper vertical flow, this page would look so much better. In other words, you have developed an eye for detail.
Are a Mac user. If you're a designer, the chances are you are.
Live in Finland. Our office is in Espoo, Leppävaara. I come to the office 1-2 times a week, as do many others. Some of us work remotely from different countries, so that's also fine.
Like clear communication. Writing is thinking. The better you can express yourself, the better we can work as a team.
Figma. The standard of modern design.
React. Everything new we build is built on top of React.
Typescript. We love type safety in everything we build.
React ARIA. A robust collection of hooks to build accessible components.
Tailwind. Never invent class names or try avoiding specificity issues with BEM, SMACSS and the like.
Modern software. Slack for communication, Jira for tickets, Notion for documentation and GitHub for source control. Some of our team members use productivity-boosting tools such as CleanShot, Grammarly, ChatGPT, Loom and Alfred.
MeetingPackage aims to bring meeting and event booking online. Our mission is to bring $1 billion in sales to our customers by 2025. Our Venue Sales Management software (SaaS) is used by hotels and venues big and small. We're a diverse team of around 30 professionals with different backgrounds and nationalities.
We're on the move. We're cash-flow positive, have enough capital to fuel our growth and are willing to find only the best people to build a company everybody enjoys working at.
You'll be the team. As our design department is currently powered by yours truly, you'll make us a team.
The industry is evolving. Hotels and venues have been manually working on bookings for a long time. We're helping our customers – and the industry – to take meeting and event booking online. As our COO Mika keeps reminding us: If something can go online, it will go online.
You're in good care. We offer competitive salaries, stock options, health insurance and a weekly 1-hour workout break. In addition, you'll get a top-of-the-line Macbook Pro, a stipend to improve your home office, flexible paid time off and your national holidays.
Now it's time to hear about you. After reading hundreds of job applications, I want to offer you three tips:
Write a personal application. I'm a human (I believe), and you're a human (hopefully), so let's skip the "Dear sir or madam" formalities and get straight to the good stuff. Start with "Hi Jussi!" and you have my attention – and appreciation.
Let your work speak for itself. Words can sometimes fall short of capturing the brilliance of a design. So, I'd love to see your work in action. Share your portfolio with pieces that make you proud, the ones that truly showcase your knack for design.
Relate to the job ad. I crafted this job ad with heart and a touch of humor, hoping it would resonate with someone just like you. When applying, share what parts of the ad caught your eye, what made you smile, or even what questions popped up in your mind. It's a wonderful way to show you're genuinely engaged and not just in a resume-sending spree!
That's it! Hit that apply button whenever you're ready – we are ready for you!
