At Klimate, we are devoted to accelerating the development and adoption of technologies that can help fight climate change by actively removing CO2 from the atmosphere.

We empower companies to compensate for unavoidable emissions through portfolios of carbon removal projects. Klimate’s portfolios aggregate and broker the best suppliers and projects ranging from forestry and soil sequestration to biochar and direct air capture.

We are looking for someone to lead our technical development and be part of an ambitious start-up that strives to be the leading broker of carbon removal solutions. 

The challenge

The science is clear: We are emitting 50 Gigatons of CO2 every year, and we need to reduce that by at least 80%. Doing this still leaves 10 Gigatons of CO2 emitted annually, and we need to get all the way to zero. At Klimate, we’re working hard to solve this problem.

Trees are great, but we need many more solutions, if we are to get to zero by 2050. Currently, most of these are too expensive (and limited in capacity) for companies to use. We've developed a platform that combines different projects and methods, making carbon removal solutions available to all companies wanting to remove their unavoidable emissions.

We already have amazing suppliers and clients who are early adopters and true pioneers. To remove more carbon, we need to advance our product and integrations to match highest technical standards. Our current system is based on .NET backend with angular FE. However, we are not married to a standard, so any full stack background can do.

Responsibilities

As our Lead Engineer, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining our system in close collaboration with our Head of Product, Simon Lauwerier and management. You will be an active part of developing our technical and product roadmap and overall strategy.

We expect that you are able to work very hands on with coding and grow into more responsibility, potentially CTO in the future.

Your tasks would include:

• Building and maintaining our system (eg. Internal admin, public record (inventory), client dashboard)

• Lead our architecture, backend, frontend and dev-ops

• Lead QA in collaboration with our Head of Product

• Creating our architecture and our technical strategy

• Managing the external development team and building our in-house capabilities and team (we will be hiring internal developers)

• Code and build as much as possible and outsource needed tasks

• Code and maintain our proprietary algorithms and database structure in collaboration with the analyst team

What skills are we looking for?

We strive to be the leading broker of carbon removal projects. You are enthusiastic about building a purpose-driven, ambitious, and sustainable company. We are looking for a technically sharp and strategically thinking individual who can drive Klimate’s technical profile.

We expect you to:

• Have relevant experience (e.g. from consulting or industry)

• Strong technical skills and coding abilities

• Have a self-driven attitude with a desire to learn new things, grow your responsibility, and move projects forward with little or no guidance

• Be structured and able to multi-task across projects, set clear goals, and ensure that we are on track - either individually or as a team.

• Be able to work professionally in English, additional languages are a plus.

We would value any of the additional competencies:

• Experience from building a product from (almost) scratch in a startup or similar environment

• Experience building consumer facing products (eg. login, dashboard, checkout and payment) and/or inventories 

• Experience working in collaboration with the design team and the ability to transform concepts into developed products

• Experience from managing 1 or 2 employees - or a desire to do so eventually

• A “can-do” attitude with an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset. If you have hands-on experience building or scaling a business, this is definitely a plus!

• Bonus: A solid interest in climate change, net-zero, Science-based Targets, and the voluntary carbon market
