Would you like to embark on a great mission to Feed The Growing Population - with a help of satellite imagery?!! Yes? Then, you came to the right place!
This project has been selected as the Top15 within the EU Horizon2020: PARSEC Accelerator (Space4Fauna). Now, it is a part of the ESA BIC DK Incubation program. If you are a passionate Remote Sensing Engineer who loves to test/model EO data to benefit the biggest and oldest Industry in the world - Farming - you are welcome to apply!
Briefly about the project:
High value crops like orchards and vineyards are in a lack of digital tools, and farmers need support in the decision making process! This is why Fauna's team created the Knowledge Database - on the insect-pests and diseases present in the field (we start with apple orchards) and coupled them with the best solutions to help the grower. We aim to further couple this Knowledge Database with the Satellite imagery data and create a Pest Risk Map: which will be displayed via the App. Pest Risk Map presents where exactly the risk for growers is located + guidance on solution: what to do next throughout the growing season to minimize the risk and farm greener.
The role of this position is to reveal the deviations in the canopy system, i.e. apple orchards using tuned analysis of satellite data retrieved from different sources. It is an asset if you have the knowledge on the Radiative Transfer Model, Evapotranspiration - more specifically look up at ESA Sen-ET: https://www.esa-sen4et.org
You hold (at a minimum) an MSc degree in Earth Observation, Data Science and are familiar with using Sentinel data but also high and very high resolution imagery (like Planet/Spot/Pleiades). You also have an expertise in advanced statistical analyses to merge satellite data from different sources (which has become a de facto standard with many available data providers). Optimization of data processing would make our product more competitive.
What we need is a fine correction of remote sensing models to detect small changes of spectral signatures on plants, especially with high resolution images. At the same time this correction will allow us to gain in accuracy of biophysical estimated of vegetation.
This project is a part of the ESA BIC Incubation DK:
