At Heap we are looking for a senior full stack web developer to join our growing startup team and focus on our backend nodejs and postgres web application. Heap is a new Copenhagen based FinTech set out to revolutionize pension as we know it, and help more people getting started, understanding, and taking control of their future economy. Put simply, we are creating a smart digital pension platform combining powerful technology, deep market insights, and humanism.

Our mission is to make pension available to individuals in a modern work environment where you aren’t tied to a specific employer for your whole career. We want to make pensions digital, easy to start with, flexible and comprehensible. We have worked on our current solution since January 2020 and are close to launching the product to the public, and we’d like you to join us on our journey.

Heap is looking for an on-location hire in Copenhagen, though we remote quite a bit to stay safe from the current pandemic. The product is currently in Danish, so while the code is of course in English, cursory knowledge of Danish is preferred. 

About you

As a senior developer you are comfortable with pair programming and mentoring your peers. You know how to leverage your experience to get things moving quickly and autonomously. You strive for high quality, but can find a productive balance with the need to get things done. You can leave your ego at the door when you collaborate around implementations and pull request reviews. You are empathetic to fields outside your expertise area and collaborate across functions to get to the best result, sometimes with solutions that are not technical. You know how you want the stack to change to get to a better place, and make plans to get it there in incremental stable moves. You put more value on the user experience we create than any specific technical feature, code gets replaced, and that's ok. You might not be an expert in pension and insurance, but you are eager to learn and understand the business to better help solve the problems we’ll face.

A typical day at Heap

You start out your day with reviewing pull requests from your colleagues to make sure they are unblocked so we can progress as a team. There’s probably some work being planned for the next sprint, so you take a quick look at that and ask some questions to make sure things are scoped correctly and unknowns are explored. At the daily status meeting we walk through our sprint board together and you make sure to listen for any blockers or research work that needs to be done to keep us progressing. There is new feedback from our integration with our pension partner and new feedback from customers onboarding, which you take into account when scoping future work. You pick up a new task, ask clarifying questions and get to work to move it along. You write the code that’s needed, test it and collaborate with your peers and product owner to ensure the code quality and user experience is what we want it to be. You move it along the pipeline and into production. There’s a frontend task in there as well, and though React might not be your favorite environment, you pick it up to help the team out. At the moment you’re probably working from home because we take covid-19 measures seriously, so for now, virtual high-fives on Slack. You make a note to demo your new feature on Friday, where we all get together to celebrate our achievements.

What you can expect from Heap

We hire you to be the expert in your field. We trust you to autonomously make technical and architectural decisions and plans, and support you in your learning to level up on whatever you might be needing. You are not expected to know everything, and when you don’t we have your back. We will provide you with the tools you need to be comfortable and do good work, and if a solution strays outside our core business we’ll prefer to pay for a service instead of making you reinvent the wheel. You will have regular 1:1’s with your peers where you can express yourself safely and we figure out how our collaboration can improve. We want to continuously improve the way we work together, so we take our retrospectives seriously. Lastly, you can expect passion, learning from failures and follow-through.
