Mechanical Design Engineer (Marble, San Francisco)

Salary Competitive

Marble is focused on getting autonomy solutions out into the world quickly, solving real problems and improving efficiency and safety. Marble is developing an autonomy sensing and software package that can function in a variety of environments, on different vehicles, for different use cases---from robots that navigate through busy, complex urban environments, to machines that operate on dusty, unstructured construction sites or mines.

Autonomous robots are very complex hardware systems. As a mechanical engineer at Marble, you will be responsible for collaborating with electrical and sensing engineering to package the cameras, computers, lasers, and other sensors into the robot. This will include environmental enclosure design, devising creative thermal solutions, robust mechanical assemblies, and developing optical systems.  You’ll have the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art high performance embedded computing and sensing and solve some of the toughest challenges on our robots covering structures, thermals, and optics.

Marble's team is small and very talented. They move fast and are looking for someone who can take on multiple projects at a time, is able to work cross-functionally, and is comfortable with sensor/electronics packaging and design for extreme environments (heavy dust, corrosion, moisture, low-high temps, shock, vibe, ESD, etc).  Marble is currently in the early phases of new product development with a fast timeline.  It is important that you have experience with a full product development lifecycle, and have been responsible for a major part/assembly from initial conception through production within the same, or similar industry.

Things that make you a good fit

  • Experience with full product development lifecycle and have been responsible for a major part/assembly from concept to production

  • Have designed electro-mechanical enclosures for use in extreme environments (mechanical shock, corrosion, high/low temps, heavy dust, water, etc)

  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with optical and non-optical sensors and their performance tradeoffs

  • Comfortable designing parts for sheet metal, injection molding, and CNC processes

  • Fluent in at least one mechanical design suite (Solidworks, Catia, NX, etc)

  • Strong knowledge of materials and their properties

  • Proficient in the thermal design and analysis of basic conductive / convective cooling systems

  • Experience collaborating with electrical engineers to create complex and elegant integrations of PCB and their connectors with electro-mechanical assemblies

Appreciated but not required

  • Bachelors/Masters in Mechanical Engineering or related field

  • Experience in any of the following: IP rating design and test, thermal design and analysis, electro-optical assemblies, shipped > 100,000 of something
