The origins of Nordic Capital date back to 1989, when Skandia Life Insurance and Svenska Handelsbanken established a joint venture to pursue buyouts. Robert Andreen and Morgan Olsson, then senior executives at Handelsbanken, co-founded Nordic Capital and, with SEK 500 million committed by Skandia, created Nordic Capital I with focus on Swedish investments. Now they are in 2016 investing from Fund VIII. They have invested in over 90 companies and made over 50 exits. The fund invests in companies; owns and supports their developments; and, after normally 3-7 years, sells the companies. Each Fund is managed by a General Partner ("GP"), domiciled in Jersey.
The size of their current fund is EUR 3,500 million. Since the companies they invest in are large to medium sized, they also invest large amounts. When a portfolio company is acquired, Nordic Capital appoints a Board of Directors. This is based on the knowledge and experience that particular company needs. They also appoint a CEO.
Before making an investment, Nordic Capital thoroughly evaluates the business dynamics of the industry in which a target company operates. This evaluation places particular emphasis on the competitive position of the company, the target company's impact on society and key stakeholders and Nordic Capital's ability to bring value and the future potential for operational improvements.
They look through opportunities for structural transformation, operational improvements, buy & build, emerging market growth, strategic repositioning, international expansion and growth acceleration.
