Tropical hurricanes are generated when masses of cold and warm air collide. And the sea surface temperature is above 26.5°C. We are doing research and development to cool the sea surface temperature by exploiting colder water deeper down in the sea. This will help us cope with climate change. The companyOceanTherm AS was founded in 2017 and is engaged in the research and development of methods and technologies preventing tropical storms from becoming devastating. OceanTerm AS also delivers maritime counseling. The challenge Many people have tried to find ways of preventing hurricanes before they make landfall, resulting in the loss of human lives. In recent years we have witnessed intense tropical storms, costing thousands of lives, as well as massive destructions. For example: in 2005, hurricane Katrina killed more than 1,800 people and caused damage of $ 90 billion. In 2016, hurricane Matthew swept across Haiti, taking 852 lives and destroying many towns on the island. The total estimated cost for damage caused by hurricanes in 2017, is calculated at $250 billion. Tropical hurricanes are generated when masses of cold and warm air collide. Another essential factor is that the sea surface temperature is above 26.5°C. Climate change is causing sea surface temperatures to increase. In the case of hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria that occurred between August and September 2017, sea surface temperatures were measured as high as 32°C. The big questionIs it possible to cool the sea surface to below 26.5°C by exploiting colder water from deeper in the water column? Unlike existing solutions we do so with high precision and low cost. Our software was developed through years of research at Lund University. We launched in November and already have the trust of some of Sweden’s largest real estate companies as well as the City of Malmö as our customers. We have also recently received grants from Energimyndigheten as well as Lund University Innovation accelerator. We are a lean, highly driven and efficient team combining deep expertise on the engineering and business side of building energy efficiency.

SCiBreak is a Swedish company founded in 2014 to commercialize new technology for interrupting electric current. Our technology allows for interruption of high AC or DC currents with high returning voltage within a few milliseconds. Conventional AC breakers need several tens of milliseconds to break and existing DC breakers for high voltage are generally very costly. The parts cost of breakers based on the concept is considerably lower than that of competing solutions. Our roots are in many ways at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm where many of us have worked and studied.

Airaimpact is a self-assessment tool for SME companies to evaluate the sustainability against UN goals. The assessment report can be used in client communications, eg.as an attachment to RFP answers and sales agreements. The development of the tool is in minimum viable product stage and needs to be evaluated on the market. The airaimpact initiative is founded by three experienced professionals who have background in robotics, software business and ICT legal.
