About Junction

Junction is a not-for-profit hackathon and tech community, with a mission to bridge the gap between creators by making everyone fall in love with technology. We organize hackathons and other tech events - around the year and around the world. The event-filled year peaks annually in November with our flagship event Junction: Europe's leading hackathon, bringing 1500+ hackers together for a weekend-long experience. Besides the events, we have built a hackathon platform, Junction Platform.

The Junction team consists of 9 full-timers in Espoo, Finland, a bunch of amazing volunteers, and our global JunctionX teams in countries across the world. Our team is rather young as most of us are still students. We have great team spirit and an independent work atmosphere but also a lot of responsibility. The work we do is very much self-directed but we love cooperation and helping each other out. At Junction, we are able to mould our roles to the direction we want, which makes the work very motivating. So as important as it is that you know the basic skills needed for this role, we are all still learning and growing in our roles as the year progresses. 

About the Role

Are you a detail-oriented person with an interest in financial management, legal matters, and the Finnish startup ecosystem? Do you have an interest in following closely the financials of a company, meanwhile supporting and developing other organisational functions, such as HR and sales?

The CFO role at Junction is focused on these themes. This role includes the ownership of all financial and legal matters, as well as handling many administrative and legally required tasks. This role also includes a lot of freedom regarding ways and times of working - but as always comes with lots of responsibility.

The key traits of a great applicant are consistency, flexibility, and accuracy in everything work-related. Excellent teamwork skills and the ability to look at the big picture are also seen as important to have.

Responsibilities

The job of the CFO includes tasks such as:

• Financial management:

  • Budgeting

  • Financial performance evaluation and cash flow forecasting

  • Cost tracking

  • Assisting in bookkeeping and auditing

• Legal matters:

  • Agreements

  • Taxation issues

  • Privacy policy & IPR

  • Insurances

• HR matters:

  • Payrolls

  • Employee contracts

  • Working time tracking

  • Occupational health

• Other areas usually involving the CFO:

  • Supporting CEO on strategy

  • Supporting sales team

The Perfect Candidate

Here’s what we require from you and your know-how:

• You enjoy precise, sometimes meticulous, and independent work

• You always try to find information and understand new things unfamiliar to you

• You are comfortable with working both independently and closely with a team

• You are interested and comfortable in working with numbers and legal texts

• You take full ownership in areas of your responsibility

• Fluent in Finnish (many legal and admin tasks require this)

Other details

Aside from the traits described above, having these would make you a great fit:

• Ability to work flexibly around other functions outside of your direct responsibilities

• Previous experience in financial management or legal matters

• Previous leadership and project management experience

• General interest in startups, hackathons, and technology

• Previous experience in Junction; volunteer or participant

• Entrepreneurial mentality: being ready to go the extra mile to help the whole team succeed

The ability to come to the office in Otaniemi, Espoo is seen as a must. CFO is a full-time, paid position in Junction. The preferred starting time would be from the beginning of January 2024. For the organization’s working efficiency reasons, it is preferable that you are able to stay in the position for a minimum of 1 year.
