Stykka is looking for a Computational Design Intern to work closely with our team of designers and developers on digital tools and processes to transform the construction industry! We are in a rapid growth phase and in need of talented people to join us on the journey.
We are a Danish construction-tech startup on a mission to help forward-thinking property developers lower their environmental impact. We have built Design-for-Manufacturing and Assembly software that allows us to design and produce high-quality, smart interior products for the construction industry - such as space-optimized student housing - sustainably and cost-efficiently.
What's the job?
We are a digital-first company with tech at the core of everything we do.
To get to where we need to go, we have to completely change the tech stack and supply chain around a pretty archaic industry, putting data in front of the decision-makers, optimizing production, digitizing packing and tracking, and offering end-users the ability to customize their products right up until the point that we produce them.
Making this a reality calls for a team of software engineers and computational designers with a diversity of skillsets - some of us understanding the industry and the production aspects, some of us making sure our platform is robust, safe, and pleasant to use.
As an intern in our tech department, you will:
Work closely together with our team of designers and software developers to develop our design automation and web-based design platforms.
Develop your programming skills by reviewing code, adding smaller features and testing out the latest work from the software team.
Prototype tools and features for internal and external applications - e.g. automation of part assemblies based on graph inputs, or the production of manufacturing data for our production partners.
Fabricate and assemble prototypes using our in-house workshop facilities to test algorithmic strategies for joints etc.
Visualize conceptual ideas ranging from design logic, to client interaction with configuration platforms etc.
Help us to document our existing tech stack, including our backend systems in Node.js + C#, our frontend in Vue3, Tailwind + Three.js, and our in-house design platform in Rhino, Rhino.Compute, C# and Google Cloud Platform.
Qualifications:
We are not so concerned with background - that is to say, if you think you are the right fit for our team, apply.
You will need to be self-driven, you will have to like researching a problem from time to time, and you will need to plan your schedule - you will be part of a small, dynamic team, and you will be expected to join the discussion and own your own tasks.
Experience in design firms, architectural or engineering offices as well as software development teams is a plus, but not required - see above.
Experience with Rhino and Grasshopper is a must - you will be expected to prove your proficiency in these, as well as your understanding of computational geometry and data management.
The ability to code in any language is great but not absolutely required - if you don’t know the specific languages we use, you’ll pick up the basics quickly enough.
You should be able to use basic tools and workshop facilities.
Experience prototyping, fabricating and assembling timber structures is a plus.
The position is paid, work is undertaken in English and we can be flexible with the start date, within reason.
And a few other things...
Be part of decision-making on other aspects of the company - if the technical solution is becoming too complex, there's a good chance we need to sit down and look at the business processes instead.
Lead your own projects as they develop - prototype something cool, then organize a team to build it for scale.
Plan your own schedule - if you're getting your good work done, then it doesn't really matter when it happens, although we do like to overlap for at least a few hours per day.
