Are you currently studying social data science (or something similar) and are eager to work on real client problems? Backscatter is on the lookout for two new interns, who can work with data analysis - preferably based on data from digital media, and with project management skills. Apply to join our team in January 2022!
Who we are
Backscatter is a human data science studio located in Nordhavn, Copenhagen. Our method is rooted in social sciences. Our mission is to create original insight into the built environment.
We are a small multidisciplinary team with a flat hierarchy - meaning you will get to work closely with, and learn a lot from, everybody in the team. As an intern, you will join our team in working hands-on with a lot of exciting projects commissioned by municipalities, NGOs and companies, which typically work within urban development - and much more.
We work with large scale public participation projects, mapping of cities, neighborhoods and communities. This is done through digital methods and meaningful research into urban and cultural phenomena, and trends. Our portfolio of projects is multifaceted, but always revolves around understanding human behaviour in the city from a social and relational perspective using digital methods.
More about the position
Ideally you have a combination of data analysis skills and project management skills, but most importantly you have an ambition to become really good at both.
What we mean by data analysis skills
You have knowledge and experience with digital methods. You are preferably studying social data science, anthropology or sociology. What is important for us is not necessarily that you have years of experience but that you are eager to learn and to apply what you have studied to real client cases.
Main tasks
Participate in the initiation and scoping of new projects
Carry out analytical and computational work. This includes:
Data harvest, cleaning and preparation
Conducting independent analytical work using modern digital methods such as network analysis and natural language processing
Participate in data sprints and netnographic analyses using both quantitative and qualitative data sources
Communicate the results of our analyses on SoMe through compelling storytelling
Assist in creating presentations
What we mean by project management skills
When it comes to project management we refer mainly to your ability to take responsibility and being structured. You want to actively support and engage in your colleagues' work - and expect the same from us. You will help our project portfolio expand and assist us on client-centered tasks.
Main tasks
Ensure quality and timeliness in our project deliveries - including planning and managing data projects
Assistance in writing applications and sales proposals to our clients
Practical assistance in preparing workshops and meeting with clients
If you can see yourself in this role we guarantee you:
Possibility to work on innovative and impactful projects in the intersection between social research and data science
The opportunity to try out new tools and research formats
Take a very active part in what Backscatter is and does
We expect you to:
Currently be studying for a MSc, preferably in social science, sociology, anthropology, techno-anthropology or similar
Be interested in working with digital methods and data analysis, as well as STS
Previous experience in writing applications for fundings or project descriptions
Lastly but most importantly, we have no interest in micromanaging your schedule but we expect a commitment from you to deliver on the tasks that are assigned to you. On the other hand we will make sure that your workload is always manageable and meaningful. We encourage anyone, regardless of background, gender, ethnicity and sexuality, to apply for the internship position.
Working hours and remuneration:
Ideally this is a 5-month full time internship. However, if this is not possible for you we would like to discuss a solution that works for both of us.
This internship is unpaid. On the other hand we offer our interns free - and really delicious lunch.
Application and deadline
Application deadline: December 1st. Interviews will be conducted shortly after.
Starting date: January 3rd
Duration: 5 months (to end of May)
To apply, please send your CV and cover letter
