Help design and scale our data platform (Backend engineer - data platform)

Salary Competitive

Sendify is hiring a backend engineer to help us design, implement, and manage our data platform. Sendify is a platform that enables businesses to scale their logistics. Your part in this journey is facilitating access to data, giving the team the tools and insights required to give our customers a competitive advantage.

Sendify’s mission is to be a logistics department for small businesses. It helps standardise the whole logistics process. It uses a mix of smart technology, clean UI, and a dedicated team to help small businesses simplify their shipping needs. Our vision is to be a full-service logistics platform for small businesses.

Sendify's head office is in Gothenburg, Sweden. You're welcome to join us in the office, but we do support remote roles.

The job

Sendify is a rare case; the team already depends heavily on data (and is hungry for more), but does not yet have a proper platform to satisfy this hunger. You - and the work you do - will be a critical part of our journey.

As the first engineer on our data platform team, your early responsibilities will be to understand how Sendify uses data today, and what our systems do well. Can we scale the current system? Should we make different technology choices? We have high ambitions for our data infrastructure, and are ready to build it with you.

Your day-to-day will place you close to several parts of the organisation. You’ll work with our in-house analyst, sync with our engineering teams, and work with internal stakeholders to understand their problems.

We’ve done the groundwork getting a first version of a data warehouse in place, and set up several pipelines to bring critical data into one place for analysis. We need someone to help us take this system to the next level as we scale the organization together.

Here’s what we think you will work on at first:

  • Setting up and maintaining our data warehouse, ETL/ELT pipelines.

  • Working with our analyst to figure out what data and systems are needed in order to better support analysis work.

  • Connecting with various cloud services, ensuring data quality and speed.

  • Educating others within the team on how to use the data.

  • Setting the structure for our collected data; transforming it to make it simple and easy to build analysis on top of.

  • Meeting with other teams to understand their needs and translating this into actionable tasks.

  • Prioritizing new tech, maintenance, and bugs to maintain high sustainable performance.

You

We want someone who's comfortable running on their own. Being early in building out our data organisation, you should be comfortable directing yourself, communicating with other teams, and making pragmatic engineering decisions.

As an early member of a new, dedicated team, you will need to be outcome driven. For you, the job is not done when the first iteration ships, it’s done when the problem is solved. You’re not here to design extensive architectures for problems we might have in the future; you’re here to solve problems that we have today. If you like to leverage technology to solve real problems - you will be a perfect fit for this role.

Your work has the potential to affect all parts of the business - tech, product, operations, sales, business development - you should be comfortable asking lots of questions to really dig into “why” something is important and learn how different users of the data value it.

From a technical level, you should be highly proficient with SQL and have deep experience with at least one high-level programming language - ideally Python, but languages such as Ruby or Javascript are OK here.

This is a great role for someone who’s interested in helping start a team and has an interest in data. You’ll most likely need to have 3+ years of software or date engineering experience for this role.

There are several skills that are beneficial, but not required:

  • AWS: This is where we run all of our infrastructure; experience here will help you get moving much quicker.

  • PowerBI / Tableau / other BI tools: We do our analysis in PowerBI currently, but experience in any BI tool will be useful.

  • Redshift / Postgres: We’re moving all of our data into Redshift; knowing how this system works, what it’s good at and bad at will be helpful. Understanding database storage formats - i.e. row vs columnar will also help.

Benefits

Join us at the perfect time. If you want to work in a fast growing small business in its most ideal form, now is the time. Sendify knows what it is, and it has the resources to get there — our job now is to get out there and build it. We're a company with huge ambitions.

Work with a high integrity and supportive team. Teach, be taught, and learn as you go. You, as an engineer, will be close to the road. This means we feel our wins, and learn from our failures. We have broad experience: expect to learn about different technologies, be part of hack-weeks, dip your toes into new languages or new codebases.

We also work alongside non-engineers: social events, team sports, karaoke (..or not karaoke), and slow summer lunches in the sun ☀️

Have a short decision path. Tech you want to work with? Techniques you've seen? A better way we can do things? This is a good place to test both your eye for what's new, but also for getting it through implementation.

Help develop the team. As we grow, we face new challenges - how should we work together best? How should we architect our systems for scale? What's the most important thing to work on right now? How should we adapt our team shape or technology to be quicker?

Process

Our process is fairly straightforward. Here’s what you can expect:

  • 30 min intro call to understand if we might be a fit for each other.

  • Personality and logic test.

  • Meet with Dan (Head of Tech)

  • Case (mix of SQL, infra, and scripting)

  • Meet Erika (Head of People and Culture)

  • Sleep on it.

  • Decide if we wish to move forward together.

Working at
Sendify

Built for small businesses looking to save time and money, Sendify is a web-based shipping service that empowers anyone to optimize their supply chain and ship smarter. Most small business owners would rather focus on their business than have to worry about shipping and logistics. Sadly, getting stuff from A to B is still one of their biggest expenses and sources of frustration. One explanation is that the shipping industry has prioritized high volume shippers, leaving small businesses with both complicated systems and unfair rates. We founded Sendify to level the playing field and empower ambitious businesses to ship smarter. With our digital platform, shippers of any size can access pre-negotiated solutions with world leading carriers, taking their supply chains into the future whilst saving an average of 20% on every shipment. Parcel or pallet, across the globe or around the corner, Sendify has you covered. Since our start in 2016, we’ve helped more than 15 000 small businesses around the world spend less time and money on shipping and more time on growing their business. This makes us known as *the* shipping and logistics solution for growing businesses in Sweden and Germany.
