iPhone/Android developer

Salary Unpaid

We have our website and API in place. We even have an Android prototype written in Kotlin, but we've come to the realization that building an app which is meant to provide safety in the mountains should not be a "first-time app".

We're therefore looking for a developer to work alongside our founder (with about 20 years of programming experience) to establish Trail 17 on the app stores.

The initial versions of the apps will be relatively simple in terms of features. We treat this like aviation: Because safety is so critical, we have to move slowly and steadily. This means your workload will be relatively low up until a point where we have sufficient cashflow to pay salaries.

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of experience (and at least 2 years on each OS)

  • 2+ years of experience in each language of choice*

  • Experience with optimization of battery consumption and background threads

  • Experience with multiple data storage types (in order to choose the best suitable)

  • Good understanding of best practices across

*) Whether you want to code in Java or Kotlin is up to you. Same story for iOS.

We want the apps to be built natively. We don't want cross-platform frameworks such as Xamarin or other cross-platform solutions.

Since people rely on our app for guidance and safety in the mountains it's absolutely critical that the we "fail with grace". We operate with multiple layers of redundancy and have to expect the unexpected.

Why should I join Trail 17?

You will be joining an ambitious, friendly and talented team of five on a journey we hope can change the face of outdoor adventures. The team is comprised of highly experienced individuals from different backgrounds and with different perspectives - but the same target in the crosshairs: To build something amazing.

We've found a significant gap in the market, we've built a solution, and now it's a game of playing our cards right to make it happen.

Working at
Trail 17

Picture this. I was on a mountain peak and I wanted to know if I could go to the neighboring peak. I never found out. Not even after I got home. I googled, I checked existing hiking websites, I read through blogs. Nothing. I've planned many hikes and it has almost always been painful, frustrating and time consuming. And often leading to dead-ends. Back to my day on the mountain: I never went on what could've been an amazing hike with astonishing views. All because something that should've been so simple wasn't readily available. In layman's terms, the solution behind Trail 17 is a different way of collecting data, and a different way of using this data. The entire trail network of an area is mapped out like roads in a city. And using a GPS navigation'esque technique Trail 17 can put together hikes or let the user choose segment by segment. We give freedom back to the hiker. We've made hike planning the way it should always been.
