Keybird Instruments IVS Copenhagen Full-timePart-time
Salary Competitive
Equity To be negotiated
Do you have experience with building, repairing or servicing pianos acoustic pianos? And do you have a fascination for design, CAD and production? Then we might be looking for you. We develop a lightweight acoustic piano, made in an innovative way, but with many traditional elements and materials. We produce them in house and want someone to take control of quality and precision, both mechanically and acoustically fine tuning our product. You will have the chance to help develop and bring ideas.

Keybird Instruments IVS is a start-up developing a lightweight acoustic piano, which we aim to have the practicality and affordability of a digital piano without giving up on the acoustic sound and authentic feeling of the keys. We believe that musical expression through the use of acoustic instruments is so valuable that there should be more affordable alternatives on the market. Currently we are in the prototyping phase and want to release our product in the fall of 2020. Many things are happening at the moment, so if you like the process of starting a company and all the little side things that happen in such a process, that will be to your advantage.

Our mission is to bring diversity and accessibility to the world of acoustic pianos. We are convinced that the acoustic piano can intrigue many enthusiasts with the way it is constructed, which has led us to the design philosophy of form follows function and construction elements being visible rather than covered. We want to open the "black box" many pianos currently resemble.

We use a combination of innovation and traditional solutions. So far, all of the vital parts of a piano (soundboard, keys and action) are made the traditional way, so that we can be sure to deliver a quality that has proven itself the last 20 years. The framework around that is our first step of innovation. Other steps will follow, and you can help us shape that future. We are mostly engineers and designers, so you will be able to grow to a role with much responsibility. It is expected from you that you have a fine taste for quality, so that you can lift the tone and touch of all our instruments to the highest height a Keybird can fly.

You are expected to be a self-starter, willing to learn to work with CAD and CNC. This is our field of expertise and we can help you. You will need extensive experience of working with wood, along with a decent background in piano servicing (regulation, intonation etc). You will also need a flair for industrial production, so that you can help us optimizing processes, so that we can get even more costumer friendly prices in the future.

The work location (Hall of The Odd, next to Kløvermarken, north Amager) is part of a larger start-up community with everything from metal and wood workshops to electronics and event management and stage decoration. Our next home will be a larger hall for production that you will be able to help establish.

Our ideal candidate:

  • is a self starter

  • has a proven background as piano technician

  • has experience from within piano production

  • is proficient in woodworking

  • likes innovation in general and is good at thinking out of the box

  • knows the basics CAD

  • has an extensive material knowledge and willingness to explore

  • is flexible and eager to learn

  • ideally has some affinity with playing piano

This is an opportunity for you to be a part of developing a brand new product development, apply your skills and see a real impact from your work. If this sounds interesting to you then we look forward to hearing from you.

Working at
Keybird Instruments IVS

Keybird Instruments is developing a lightweight acoustic piano to help piano enthusiasts play with their preferred sound (acoustic) with a practicality and price comparable to that of digital pianos. Nine out of ten piano enthusiasts prefer acoustic sound, yet most play digital because of price, size and weight. We want to combine the best of both worlds. We can offer an acoustic piano that weighs only 40 + 15 kg, only occupying half a square meter of valuable living space. It can be transported in normal cars. The first model has a slightly reduced amount of keys (just like many digital keyboards) having all the keys for pop and jazz but also most of classical music in the first five years of music schools. We are in the Beta phase and will open up for sales in Autumn 2020. We use one string per key which allows us to build a piano significantly lighter, even with long strings to maintain optimal sound quality. We thus have a strong focus on sound quality, rather than loudness. We can reach the low price due to automated production here in Europe and a design strategy that allows this. We started this because we needed it for ourselves and saw the need for others. We asked all the piano enthusiasts we could reach and get the interest in our product confirmed. The huge market of acoustic and digital piano (we combine the benefits) is what keeps us in pace to release a great product.
